Statement By Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Regarding The Need For Stronger State Laws To Combat Terrorism

Our state and nation must gird itself for a long-term effort to combat terrorism. As part of that effort, we must enact stronger state sanctions against a full range of activities linked to terrorism. The Governor has proposed an important first step in this process. His legislative package includes new measures that will help ensure that those who assist terrorists and those who hinder prosecution of terrorists are brought to justice.

In addition, the Governor will advance a measure that provides new roving wire tap authority for prosecutors. My office has long sought such authority to help apprehend those who repeatedly switch their base of operations to avoid detection of criminal activities. This will be an extremely effective tool in combating terrorism.

I strongly support the Governor's proposal and urge state lawmakers to give it their highest consideration.
