Statement From A.G. Schneiderman On Supreme Court Decision In Friedrichs Vs. California Teachers Association

NEW YORK—Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision in Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association is an important victory for the labor movement and for states like New York that rely on fair, straightforward, and just rules of collective bargaining to maintain labor peace  and ensure the efficient delivery of government services. Today, an equally divided Court in the case affirmed a decision allowing public employees covered by an exclusive-representation collective bargaining arrangement to be charged a fee to cover their fair share of the costs of collective bargaining. I am pleased that this longstanding rule remains the law and that states like New York can continue to manage our own labor relations and to continue our long tradition of support for workers.”
