Attorney General James' Statement on the Passing of Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens

NEW YORK - Attorney General Letitia James released the following statement after the passing of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens this evening:

“Hearts are much heavier tonight across the nation and throughout our Courts following the passing of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. 

“‪Justice Stevens was a lion of the Court, who dedicated his life and career to ensuring our nation was a more just and more equal place for all. 

“Justice Stevens didn't opine as a Republican or a Democrat, but as an independent jurist who put our country, the law, and, most importantly, the U.S. Constitution first. He not only left his mark on some of the most consequential issues of our time, but provided many of the most poignant, impactful opinions and dissents of the 20th and 21st centuries. 

“After nearly a century, Justice Stevens leaves behind a legacy of honor and a grateful nation. Our democracy is no doubt stronger and more vibrant today because of his service.”
