Releases Report on Investigation into the Death of DeWayne Watkins

SYRACUSE – Attorney General Letitia James’ Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit (SIPU) today released its report into the death of DeWayne Watkins. After an investigation, SIPU did not find criminal culpability, but provided recommendations to the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications – 911 Center (OCDEC) to ensure that appropriate and relevant information is shared about first responder requests. Attorney General James released the following statement:

“The death of DeWayne Watkins was a tragedy and I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. The Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit is committed to executing thorough investigations and providing the public with clear and complete accountings of all cases we investigate under our authority to investigate police-involved civilian deaths. SIPU conducted an exhaustive investigation into the death of DeWayne Watkins and encourages the OCDEC to implement the recommendations outlined in the report to ensure first responders are appropriately informed of situations they are responding to.”
