New York Attorney General James Calls for Minnesota Attorney General Ellison to be Appointed Special Prosecutor to Investigate Death of George Floyd

NY AG Serves as Special Prosecutor in Some Instances of Police-Involved Civilian Deaths

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today called on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to immediately appoint Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison as a special prosecutor to investigate the death of George Floyd. In New York, Attorney General James serves as a special prosecutor in matters relating to the death of unarmed civilians caused by law enforcement officers per an executive order signed in the aftermath of the death of Eric Garner. Attorney General James released the following statement:

“The world saw what happened to George Floyd — our eyes didn’t lie — and now we must ensure that justice is served. In order to conduct a truly independent investigation of Mr. Floyd’s death, it’s imperative that a special prosecutor be appointed, and I’m urging Governor Walz to appoint Attorney General Ellison as that special prosecutor. Mr. Floyd’s family and communities in Minneapolis and across the country deserve answers and some semblance of justice for this horribly unjust act. Attorney General Ellison will help ensure that justice is served.”
