Attorney General James Releases Statement on Death of Karlianne Short in Syracuse
NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today released the following statement after attending the funeral of Karlianne Short, a 17-year old girl who was killed on July 4th because of senseless gun violence:
“I am deeply saddened by the death of Karlianne Short whose life was tragically cut short because of senseless gun violence. From the heartfelt stories and words spoken today, it was clear that Karlianne was a beloved daughter, friend, and student who touched so many lives. No one should be afraid to send their children to school, to go to a grocery store, to play outside, or to go to church. And yet, because of the gun violence, these everyday activities now put our loved ones at risk. We have a responsibility to protect lives, and that means we must continue to get guns off our streets, pass stronger gun safety regulations, and hold those making our streets dangerous accountable. Karlianne’s family and New Yorkers across the state have my word that I will continue to fight every day to stop the scourge of gun violence and keep our communities safe.”
